Voice
Song is a 'wee-chee-chee-cheee', uttered in aerial display, lower and descending in pitch more so than Brown-crowned Tchagra (Tchagra australis). Also harsh churring calls.

Subspecies
Forms a superspecies with Brown-crowned Tchagra (Tchagra australis) and Three-streaked Tchagra (Tchagra jamesi).

The following 3 subspecies are recognised:

natalensis (Reichenow, 1903) - North-eastern South Africa (eastern Mpumalanga and KwaZulu-Natal) and western Swaziland.
caffrariae Quickelberge, 1967 - Eastern Cape from KwaZulu-Natal border south to area of R Great Fish.
tchagra (Vieillot, 1816) - Southern South Africa from southern western Cape east to southern eastern Cape (east to Uitenhage region).
