Subspecies
Apparently most closely allied to Sabine's Puffback (Dryoscopus sabini), juveniles of the two being strikingly alike and females very similar to each other in plumage. Subspecies boydi not well defined, possibly represents clinal variation and perhaps better merged with nominate.
The following 4 subspecies are recognised:
boydi Bannerman, 1938 - Extreme south-eastern Nigeria and western Cameroon.
nandensis Sharpe, 1900 - Extreme southern Sudan, north-eastern and eastern DRCongo, western and southern Uganda, extreme north-western Tanzania, western Rwanda and western Kenya.
kungwensis Moreau, 1941 - Mt Kungwe Mahale (Mahare), in south-western Tanzania.
