Southern and eastern Ethiopia, central and southern Somalia, north-west, north-eastern and central to south-eastern Kenya and north-eastern Tanzania.

Subspecies
No subspecies.

Considered to form a superspecies with Northern Puffback (Dryoscopus gambensis), the two being very alike in plumage and having parapatric ranges (some sympatry in southern Ethiopia). Birds of this species in Ethiopia, having greyer underparts, may represent a distinct subspecies. Further study is required.
