The following 9 subspecies are recognised:
- chrysomela (Garnot, 1827) - New Hanover and New Ireland, in Bismarck Archipelago.
- melanonotus (Sclater, PL, 1877) - Western Papuan Is (Waigeo, Batanta, Salawati, Misool) and north-western New Guinea (Vogelkop).
- kordensis (Meyer, AB, 1874) - Biak I (in Geelvink Bay), in north-western New Guinea.
- aruensis (Salvadori, 1874) - Aru Is, off south-western New Guinea.
- aurantiacus (Meyer, AB, 1891) - Northern New Guinea.
- nitidus (De Vis, 1897) - Southern and eastern New Guinea, including D’Entrecasteaux Archipelago.
- pulcherrimus (Salomonsen, 1964) - Dyaul I, off north-western New Ireland.
- tabarensis (Mayr, 1955) - Tabar Is, off eastern New Ireland.
- whitneyorum (Mayr, 1955) - Lihir Is, off eastern New Ireland.
