Habitat
Subtropical and tropical dry forest, lowland moist forest. Also, subtropical and tropical montane moist forest, heavily degraded former forest.

Indonesia, Papua New Guinea.

Subspecies
The following 9 subspecies are recognised:

  • chrysomela (Garnot, 1827)   -  New Hanover and New Ireland, in Bismarck Archipelago.
  • melanonotus (Sclater, PL, 1877)   -  Western Papuan Is (Waigeo, Batanta, Salawati, Misool) and north-western New Guinea (Vogelkop).
  • kordensis (Meyer, AB, 1874)   -  Biak I (in Geelvink Bay), in north-western New Guinea.
  • aruensis (Salvadori, 1874)   -  Aru Is, off south-western New Guinea.
  • aurantiacus (Meyer, AB, 1891)   -  Northern New Guinea.
  • nitidus (De Vis, 1897)   -  Southern and eastern New Guinea, including D’Entrecasteaux Archipelago.
  • pulcherrimus (Salomonsen, 1964)   -  Dyaul I, off north-western New Ireland.
  • tabarensis (Mayr, 1955)   -  Tabar Is, off eastern New Ireland.
  • whitneyorum (Mayr, 1955)   -  Lihir Is, off eastern New Ireland.
