Voice
A series of harsh, buzzing raps, similar to that of Bougainville Monarch (Monarcha erythrostictus) and White-capped Monarch (Monarcha richardsii).

Subspecies
Forms a superspecies with Black-faced Monarch (Monarcha melanopsis), Bougainville Monarch (Monarcha erythrostictus), Black-winged Monarch (Monarcha frater) and White-capped Monarch (Monarcha richardsii). Has been considered conspecific with Bougainville Monarch (Monarcha erythrostictus).

The following 4 subspecies are recognised:

  • castaneiventris Verreaux, 1858   -  Solomon Is (Choiseul, Santa Isabel, Guadalcanal, Malaita).
  • obscurior Mayr, 1935   -  Russell Is (east-central Solomons).
  • megarhynchus Rothschild & Hartert, 1908   -  San Cristobal (south-eastern Solomons). Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Makira Monarch (Monarcha megarhynchus).
  • ugiensis (Ramsay, EP, 1882)   -  Ugi, Three Sisters Is and other small islands off San Cristobal (Solomons). Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Ugi Monarch (Monarcha ugiensis).
