The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
- axillaris (Salvadori, 1876) - Western New Guinea (Vogelkop and western Snow Mts).
- fallax (Ramsay, EP, 1885) - Mountains of north-central and eastern New Guinea and D'Entrecasteaux Archipelago (Goodenough I).
