Habitat
Primary and secondary lowland diptocarp, keranga and peatswamp to lower montane forest, plantations, to about 1200m.

Range (Guide)
Bangladesh, Bhutan, Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, China (mainland), India, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Nepal, Philippines (B), Singapore (B), Sri Lanka, Thailand, Vietnam.

Vagrant to Pakistan.

Indian sub-continent, southern China, Taiwan, south-eastern Asia, Indonesia, Philippines, Borneo.

Habits
Singly or in pairs. Active insectivore, foraging in lower and mid-storey. Noisy but often difficult to observe.

Voice
Call is a wheezy 'shweet shweet...'. Song is a ringing 'weet-weet-weet...'.

Nest
Cup-shaped, comppsed of moss, twigs and rootlets, about 1.5 - 2 m above the ground in understorey vegetation.

Eggs (Guide)
2; creamy-white to pinkish-white with brown and grey splotches, spots or specks.

Subspecies
South-eastern subspecies puella, aeria, blasii and catarmanensis form well-marked "puella group", sometimes treated as a distinct species.

  • styani (Hartlaub, 1899)   -  Much of India (except northern and north-west) and Nepal east to south-eastern China and Vietnam.
  • oberholseri Stresemann, 1913   -  Taiwan.

  • nicobarica Bianchi, 1907   -  Southern Nicobar Is.
  • montana Riley, 1929   -  Northern and central Thailand.
  • galerita (Deignan, 1956)   -  South-western and south-eastern Thailand.
  • forrestia Oberholser, 1911   -  Mergui Archipelago, off western Myanmar.
  • prophata Oberholser, 1911   -  Southern Thailand, Peninsular Malaysia, Sumatra and Borneo.
  • consobrina Richmond, 1902   -  Simeulue I, off north-western Sumatra.
  • abbotti Richmond, 1902   -  Reusam and Babi (Seast of Simeulue).
  • leucophila Oberholser, 1911   -  Siberut I (off western Sumatra).

  • javana Chasen & Kloss, 1929   -  Java and Bali.
  • penidae Meise, 1942   -  Penida I (near Bali).
  • symmixta Stresemann, 1913   -  Western and central Lesser Sundas.
  • azurea (Boddaert, 1783)   -  Philippines (except Camiguin Sur).
  • catarmanensis Rand & Rabor, 1969   -  Camiguin Sur (off Mindanao), in southern Philippines.
  • aeria Bangs & Peters, JL, 1927   -  Maratua I (off eastern Borneo).
  • puella (Wallace, 1863)   -  Sulawesi and nearby islands. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Pale-blue Monarch (Hypothymis puella).
  • blasii E. J. O. Hartert, 1898   -  Banggai Is and Sula Is. Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Pale-blue Monarch (Hypothymis puella).
