Food
Insectivorous, with cicadas making up almost half of its diet. May also take small vertebrates.
Voice
A soft 'plitt-plitt' when hawking insects. Also buzzing notes and scratchy cries, including a loud 'tyok' repeated several times, 'squaa-aa-kuchuk'. A throaty 'choo-kroo-kreech' when alarmed at the nest. Song is a harsh jumble of chirps and squeaks. Pairs perform duets in their territories throughout the breeding season. Imitates call of other bird species.
Subspecies
Recent DNA studies indicate that closest relatives are Crested Drongo (Dicrurus forficatus) and Aldabra Drongo (Dicrurus aldabranus) and all three previously thought to be part of a superspecies that contains also Comoro Drongo (Dicrurus fuscipennis), Black Drongo (Dicrurus macrocercus), Fork-tailed Drongo (Dicrurus adsimilis) and Velvet-mantled Drongo (Dicrurus modestus), but morphological and genetic differentiation too great to support such a relationship.
