Subspecies
Forms a superspecies with New Caledonia Streaked Fantail (Rhipidura verreauxi), Dusky Fantail (Rhipidura tenebrosa), Rennell Fantail (Rhipidura rennelliana), Kadavu Fantail (Rhipidura personata) and Samoan Fantail (Rhipidura nebulosa).

The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

drownei Mayr, 1931 - Bougainville I.
ocularis Mayr, 1931 - Guadalcanal, in Solomon Is. May later be considered as a seperate species. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Guadalcanal Fantail (Rhipidura ocularis).
