Subspecies
Forms a group with White-bellied Thicket-Fantail (Rhipidura leucothorax) and Black Thicket-Fantail (Rhipidura maculipectus).
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
- threnothorax Müller, 1843 - New Guinea (including western Papuan islands of Waigeo, Salawati and Misool) and Aru Is.
- fumosa Schlegel, 1871 - Yapen I, in Geelvink Bay (north-western New Guinea).
