Subspecies
Distinctive subspecies montanus sometimes treated as a separate species, a possibility that deserves further study.
The following 8 subspecies are recognised:
solaris Blyth, 1846 - Central and eastern Himalayas (west-central Nepal east to Assam) and northern and western Myanmar.
rubrolimbatus Salvadori, 1887 - Eastern and south-eastern Myanmar and northern Thailand.
montpellieri La Touche, 1922 - Southern China (northern Yunnan).
griseogularis Gould, 1863 - South-eastern China (Guizhou, northern Guangxi, central and southern Hunan, Guangdong, north-western and eastern Fujian), Taiwan, Hainan, north-eastern Laos and northern Vietnam.
deignani Riley, 1940 - Southern Laos and central Vietnam (central and southern Annam).
nassovicus Deignan, 1938 - South-eastern Thailand and southern Cambodia.
montanus Salvadori, 1879 - Peninsular Malaysia and western Sumatra. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Grey-throated Minivet (Pericrocotus montanus).
cinereigula Sharpe, 1889 - Northern Borneo.
Similar Species
Scarlet Minivet (Pericrocotus flammeus), the male of which has a black throat, the female has yellow on the forehead, ear-coverts and throat. Wing patterns also also different.
