Fiery Minivet (Pericrocotus igneus) [XC359968]
by Peter Boesman from Rainforest Discovery Center, Sepilok, Sabah, Borneo, Malaysia (call)

Subspecies
Forms a superspecies with Small Minivet (Pericrocotus cinnamomeus) and Flores Minivet (Pericrocotus lansbergei). Sometimes treated as a subspecies of Small Minivet (Pericrocotus cinnamomeus), and relationship between the two not fully resolved. There is no evidence of interbreeding (except for a single, purportedly intermediate specimen) where their ranges meet, in peninsular Thailand, and different habitat preferences may prevent direct contact between them.

The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

  • igneus Blyth, 1846   -  Southern Myanmar (Tenasserim), southern Thailand, Peninsular Malaysia, Sumatra (including Nias I, Bangka and Belitung), Borneo and south-western Philippines (Palawan).
  • trophis Oberholser, 1912   -  Simeulue I, off western Sumatra.
