Abundance (Guide)
LC - UC

Common in the far north, uncommon in the south. Locally nomadic.

Habitat
Mainly rainforests, including along the edges and in clearings and open regrowth.

Range (Guide)
Australia, Indonesia, Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands.

Habits
Usually small flocks of up to 20, and occasionally 40. Singly or in pairs when breeding.

Food
Wild figs, other native fruits and berries, insects and their larvae.

Voice
A pleasent, musical chatter, like a toy mouth organ.

Nest
Shallow, open, composed of fine twigs and rootlets, bound with cobweb, in a fork of a tree, up to 20 meters or more above the ground.

Eggs (Guide)
2; dull white to green-grey, dotted with grey, olive and brown, often forming a zone at the larger end; oblong-oval; about 31 x 22 mm. Incubation: by both parents.

Young
Altricial, nidicolous. Fed by both parents.

Subspecies
The following 10 subspecies are recognised:

  • axillaris (Salvadori, 1876)   -  Western Papuan Is (Waigeo I) and mountains of west, northern and south-eastern New Guinea (Vogelkop, northern coastal ranges and Huon Peninsula).
  • maforensis (Meyer, AB, 1874)   -  Numfoor I, in Geelvink Bay (north-western New Guinea).
  • sublineata (Sclater, PL, 1879)   -  Bismarck Archipelago (New Ireland, New Britain).
  • nigrifrons (Tristram, 1892)   -  Northern Solomon Is (Bougainville, Choiseul, Santa Isabel).
  • ombriosa (Rothschild & Hartert, 1905)   -  Central Solomons (Kolombangara, New Georgia, Rendova and others).
  • pusilla (Ramsay, EP, 1879)   -  Guadalcanal (southern Solomons).
  • malaitae Mayr, 1931   -  Malaita (southern Solomons).
  • makirae Mayr, 1935   -  San Cristobal (south-eastern Solomons).
  • gracilis Mayr, 1931   -  Rennell (extreme southern Solomons).
  • lineata (Swainson, 1825)   -  North-eastern Australia, from eastern Queensland south to north-eastern New South Wales.


Similar Species
In poor views with female, juvenile and immature Cicadabird (Edolisoma tenuirostre) and Oriental Cuckoo (Cuculus optatus).
