by Paul Noakes from PICOP, Bislig, Mindanao, Philippines (?)
Subspecies
Sister-species to and formerly treated as conspecific with Dark-throated Oriole (Oriolus xanthonotus), both possibly forming a superspecies with Isabela Oriole (Oriolus isabellae) and all were formerly placed in the alternative genus Xanthonotus. Subspecies albiloris sometimes treated as a separate species, with closer relationship to Isabela Oriole (Oriolus isabellae). Sometimes misspelt "albilorus".
Proposed subspecies nigrostriatus (from Negros and Masbate) is synonymized with nominate.
The following 6 subspecies are recognised:
albiloris Sharpe, 1877 - Mountains of northern and west-central Luzon (provinces of Benguet, Cagayan, Ilocos Norte, Nueva Ecija and Bataan), in northern Philippines. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, White-lored Oriole (Oriolus albiloris).
steerii Sharpe, 1877 - Masbate and Negros, in central Philippines.
assimilis Tweeddale, 1878 - Cebu, in central Philippines.
samarensis Steere, 1890 - Samar, Leyte, Bohol and eastern Mindanao, in east-central and south-eastern Philippines.
basilanicus Ogilvie-Grant, 1896 - Basilan and western Mindanao, in southern Philippines.
cinereogenys Bourns & Worcester, 1894 - Sulu Archipelago (Tawi-Tawi and Bongao, possibly also Baliungan).
