Subspecies
Forms a superspecies with Brown Oriole (Oriolus szalayi), Halmahera Oriole (Oriolus phaeochromus), Seram Oriole (Oriolus forsteni), Olive-backed Oriole (Oriolus sagittatus) and Timor Oriole (Oriolus melanotis).

The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

bouroensis (Quoy & Gaimard, 1830) - Buru, in S Moluccas.
decipiens (P. L. Sclater, 1883) - Tanimbar Is, in E Lesser Sundas. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Tanimbar Oriole (Oriolus decipiens).
