Habitat
Mid-montane forest. From 1,100 - 1,700 m.

Range (Guide)

Papua New Guinea (B) (NB).

Adelbert Range and Huon Peninsula (Finisterre Range, Saruwaged Range, Cromwell Mts, Rawlinson Mts), in north-eastern New Guinea.

Population
Estimated population is 2,500 - 9,999 (2010) and decreasing.

Status NT
Habitat destruction and degradation is the main threat.

Harsh, double cockatoo-like roar 'khh kaakkk' and nasal twitterings.

No subspecies.

Similar Species
Other Parotia spp. are extralimital. Huon Astrapia (Astrapia rothschildi) has longer, blunt-tipped tail. Superb Bird-of-paradise (Lophorina superba) which is smaller with short, square tail.
