Subtropical and tropical montane moist forest. Also subtropical and tropical heavily degraded former forest. From 1,900 - 2,900 m.

Subspecies
Intergeneric hybridization unrecorded in wild, but species crossed with Ribbon-tailed Astrapia (Astrapia mayeri) in captivity.

Proposed subspecies megarhynchus (described from Gebroeders Mts, in Weyland Range) synonymized with albicans.

The following 3 subspecies are recognised:

  • albicans Finsch, 1885   -  Central Cordillera of New Guinea from Weyland Mts east to Hindenburg Mts and Victor Emanuel Mts.
  • bloodi Mayr and Gilliard, 1951   -  Mountains of eastern New Guinea from at least Mt Hagen and Mt Giluwe (probably from Doma Peaks/Tari region) east to Kratke Range just west of Watut/Tauri Gap.
  • meyeri Finsch, 1885   -  Mountains of south-eastern New Guinea eastern from Mt Missim (east of Watut/Tauri Gap) and Ekuti Range.
