Nest
Deep, saucer-shaped, composed mainly of vine-tendrils, woven into the outer fork of a leafy branch in the canopy of a tall tree, usually between 10 and 20 m above the ground. The nest is often placed in close association with that of a Black Butcherbird (Melloria quoyi).
Eggs (Guide)
1 or 2; very pale dull purplish pink, spotted and finely blotched all over with red-brown, umber and violet-grey, often in a zone at the larger end; oval; about 37 x 24 mm. Incubation: 15 - 16 days; by both sexes.
Subspecies
Subspecies hunsteini has been considered possibly a separate species.
Proposed subspecies mayri (described from Wau, in north-eastern New Guinea) synonymized with purpureoviolaceus, but may, like many other Huon Peninsula forms, prove to be distinct so further study required. Birds of Mamberamo R area not yet assigned to any subspecies.
The following 9 subspecies are recognised:
keraudrenii (Lesson & Garnot, 1826) - Western New Guinea (Vogelkop, Onin Peninsula and Weyland Mts).
aruensis (Cracraft, 1992) - Aru Is.
jamesii Sharpe, 1877 - Lowlands of southern New Guinea from Mimika R to Port Moresby, including islands in northern Torres Strait (Boigu and Saibai).
neumanni Reichenow, 1918 - Northern coastal ranges and scarp of Central Range from Bewani, Torricelli Mts and Lordberg east to Schrader Range and Jimi R and Baiyer R watersheds (Sepik-Wahgi Divide), in eastern New Guinea.
adelberti (Gilliard and LeCroy, 1967) - Adelbert Mts, in north-eastern New Guinea.
diamondi (Cracraft, 1992) - Southern watershed of eastern Highlands (from near Okapa, possibly including portions of Kratke Range), in eastern New Guinea.
purpureoviolaceus Meyer, AB, 1885 - Uplands of south-eastern New Guinea eastern from Kuper Range and Wau through Owen Stanley Range (distributional details not well delineated).
hunsteini Sharpe, 1882 - D'Entrecasteaux Archipelago (Goodenough, Fergusson and Normanby).
gouldii (Gray, GR, 1859) - Extreme north-eastern Australia (north-eastern Cape York Peninsula, and immediately adjacent Albany I and Mai I).
