Status NT
Degradation of desert habitats through the intensive grazing of goats and camels, extraction of fuelwood and the conversion of huge areas to irrigated land is the main threat.

Subspecies

Forms a species pair with Mongolian Ground-jay (Podoces hendersoni). The two are sometimes united in a separate genus, Eupodoces, differing from other two members of genus in having black on crown, relatively long uppertail-coverts and dark legs, and lacking blackish breast patch.
