Estimated population is 5,800 (2010) and decreasing.
Status VU
Nest predation by crows and mammals and the small Indian mongoose Herpestes javanicus appears to be the main threat.

Food
Acorns of Castanopsis cuspidate, Quercus glauca and other oaks when they are available, and when this supply is scare in agricultural fields on sweet potato. Also, insects, seeds fruits, reptiles, including Okinawa pit-viper Trimeresurus flavoviridis, and maybe birds.
