Subspecies
Genus sometimes subsumed in Cyanocorax. Forms a superspecies with Black-throated Magpie-jay (Cyanocorax colliei) and often considered conspecific, and the two interbreed in south-western Mexico (Jalisco and Colima, where birds with intermediate characters locally common). A hybrid with Brown Jay (Cyanocorax morio) recorded in southern Mexico (Chiapas). Nominate subspecies intergrades with azurea in Oaxaca (southern Mexico).
The following 3 subspecies are recognised:
formosa (Swainson, 1827) - Southern Mexico from Colima, Michoacán and Puebla south to Oaxaca.
azurea Nelson, 1897 - Pacific slope in south-eastern Mexico (Oaxaca and Chiapas) and western Guatemala.
pompata Bangs, 1914 - South-eastern Mexico (interior of eastern Oaxaca, interior of Chiapas) and Atlantic side of Guatemala (Motagua Valley) south through El Salvador and western Honduras to north-western Costa Rica.
