Habitat
Subtropical and tropical lowland and montane moist forest, lowland moist shrubland, dry savanna. From sea-level - 3,000 m.

Subspecies
Formerly placed in a monotypic genus, Xanthoura. Subspecies fall into two groups, one in Central America (first eight listed below), known as the "luxuosus group", and the other in Andes of South America (remaining five subspecies), known as "nominate group". The groups are sometimes treated as two separate species. Subspecies luxuosus intergrades with vividus in south-eastern Sierra de Tuxtla and Catemaco region of southern Veracruz.

Proposed subspecies andicolus (Andes of Mérida, Venezuela) subsumed into cyanodorsalis.

The following 14 subspecies are recognised:

  • glaucescens (Boddaert, 1783)   -  Extreme southern USA (southern Texas) and north-eastern Mexico (western Tamaulipas and Nuevo León). Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Green Jay (Cyanocorax luxuosus).
  • luxuosus (Lesson, 1839)   -  Extreme southern USA (lower Rio Grande valley and south-eastern corner of Texas) south through eastern and south-central Mexico (south to Puebla and southern Veracruz). Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Green Jay (Cyanocorax luxuosus). Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Green Jay (Cyanocorax luxuosus).
  • speciosus (Nelson, 1900)   -  Pacific slope of Mexico in Nayarit and Jalisco. Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Green Jay (Cyanocorax luxuosus).
  • vividus (Ridgway, 1900)   -  Pacific slope of southern Mexico (from Colima and Guerrero east to western Guatemala (Solola, in Patulul). Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Green Jay (Cyanocorax luxuosus).
  • maya (van Rossem, 1934)   -  Tabasco and Yucatán Peninsula (except extreme southern Quintana Roo), in eastern Mexico. Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Green Jay (Cyanocorax luxuosus).
  • cozumelae (van Rossem, 1934)   -  Cozumel I (off north-eastern Yucatán Peninsula).
  • centralis (van Rossem, 1934)   -  South-eastern Mexico (extreme eastern Tabasco and adjacent parts of Chiapas east through extreme southern Quintana Roo), northern and eastern Guatemala, Belize and northern Honduras. Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Green Jay (Cyanocorax luxuosus).
  • confusus A. R. Phillips, 1966   -  Pacific slope of southern Chiapas (Mexico) and Guatemala. Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Green Jay (Cyanocorax luxuosus).
  • galeatus (Ridgway, 1900)   -  Subtropical zone of Colombia west of eastern Andes.
  • cyanodorsalis Dubois, AJC, 1874   -  Central and eastern Colombia (subtropical zone of eastern Andes) and north-western Venezuela (Zulia, and southern Lara south to Táchira and Barinas).
  • guatimalensis (Bonaparte, 1850)   -  Mountains of northern Venezuela (Falcón east to Sucre and Anzoátegui.
  • yncas (Boddaert, 1783)   -  South-western Colombia (subtropical zone, in valleys of upper Cauca, Patí­a, and San Miguel) south through eastern Ecuador and Peru to central Bolivia (La Paz and Cochabamba).
  • longirostris (Carriker, 1933)   -  Arid upper valley of R Marañón, in northern Peru.
  • andicolus Hellmayr & von Seilern, 1912   -  Mountains of northern Venezuela.
