Habitat
Subtropical and tropical montane moist forest. From 2,000 - 3,200 m, occasionally down to 1,300 m.
Costa Rica, Panama.

Subspecies
Forms a monophyletic group with Black-throated Jay (Cyanolyca pumilo), Dwarf Jay (Cyanolyca nanus) and White-throated Jay (Cyanolyca mirabilis).
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
- albior Pitelka, 1951 - Central Costa Rica (Cordillera Central).
- argentigula (Lawrence, 1875) - Southern Costa Rica (Cordillera de Talamanca) and western Panama (east to Pico Blanco).
