Subspecies
Affinities uncertain. Probably one of the most primitive members of the family, but has received remarkably little study. Subspecies well differentiated, and may represent two separate species. Research, including comparative molecular studies, required.
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
leucopterus (Temminck, 1824) - Malay Peninsula southern from extreme southern Myanmar (southern Tenasserim) and southern Thailand, Bintan (in Riau Archipelago), Sumatra and Bangka I.
aterrimus (Temminck, 1829) - Borneo. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Bornean Black Magpie (Platysmurus aterrimus).
