Rarity Status
Currently this species is not classified as a rarity in this country OR information has not been updated.
Status EX
Common until 1863, and is known from numerous specimens. The species declined very rapidly in the 1880s, and the last sight record was from 1963. Extinction was probably mainly due to predation by introduced rats, but habitat destruction is likely to have been a contributing factor.

Subspecies
No subspecies.
Was formerly considered to be conspecific with North Island Piopio (Turnagra tanagra).
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
- capensis ! (Sparrman, 1787) - South Island, NZ.
- minor ! Fleming, JH, 1915 - Formerly New Zealand (Stephens Island). Extinct; last reported 1897.
