Subspecies
The following 3 subspecies are recognised:

cristatus (Salvadori, 1875) - North-western and western New Guinea: mountains of Vogelkop and Onin Peninsula, Weyland Mts and Nassau Mts.
arthuri E. J. O. Hartert, 1930 - Northern and central New Guinea east to Sepik Mts in northern and Karimui area of Chimbu Province in S; Cyclops Mts; R Oriomo area, southern Trans-Fly region.
kodonophonos Mayr, 1931 - South-eastern New Guinea eastern from L Kutubu.
