Subspecies
The following 6 subspecies are recognised:
leucorhynchus (Gray, GR, 1862) - Northern West Papuan Is (Waigeo I).
fuscus Greenway, 1966 - Batanta, south of Waigeo.
ferrugineus (Bonaparte, 1850) - Islands of Salawati and Misool, and north-western mainland New Guinea from Vogelkop east to Wandammen and Etna Bay, and southern slopes of Nassau Mts and Oranje Mts.
holerythrus (Salvadori, 1878) - Yapen I (in Geelvink Bay) and northern New Guinea eastern at least Humboldt Bay area (and presumably Vanimo).
brevipennis (Hartert, 1896) - Aru Is.
clarus (Meyer, AB, 1894) - Southern and eastern New Guinea.
