Subspecies
Considerable geographical variation, with many named subspecies and areas of intergradation between adjacent forms; subspecies fall into several groups based mainly on colour of head, throat and breast, but complicated by sexual dimorphism in some populations and much individual variation.
Proposed subspecies salvadorii (from western coast of Geelvink Bay) represents an intergrade population.

cerviniventris (Lesson & Garnot, 1827) - Northern West Papuan Is (Waigeo, Gemien).
pallidus van Oort, 1907 - Batanta I and Sagewin I.
uropygialis (G. R. Gray, 1862) - Southern West Papuan Is (Salawati, Misool).
tibialis (Sharpe, 1877) - North-western New Guinea (western half of Vogelkop).
kirhocephalus (Lesson & Garnot, 1827) - North-eastern coast of Vogelkop (south to Momi).
dohertyi Rothschild & Hartert, 1903 - North-western New Guinea (Wandammen District and adjacent islands).
rubiensis (Meyer, AB, 1884) - North-western New Guinea (head of Geelvink Bay).
brunneivertex Rothschild, 1931 - South-eastern coast of Geelvink Bay.
jobiensis (Meyer, AB, 1874) - Islands in north-eastern Geelvink Bay (Yapen I, Kurudu I).
meyeri Rothschild & Hartert, 1903 - Northern coast of New Guinea from R Mamberano east to R Tami.
senex Stresemann, 1922 - Upper Sepik Valley (northern New Guinea).
brunneicaudus (Meyer, AB, 1891) - North-eastern New Guinea from lower R Sepik east to upper R Ramu.
decipiens (Salvadori, 1878) - Onin Peninsula, in south-western New Guinea.
adiensis Mees, 1964 - Adi I (off southern coast of Bomberai Peninsula).
stramineipectus van Oort, 1907 - Triton Bay district of south-western New Guinea.
carolinae Junge, 1952 - Etna Bay.
