Subspecies
Possibly close to Olive Whistler (Pachycephala olivacea), Red-lored Whistler (Pachycephala rufogularis) and Gilbert's Whistler (Pachycephala inornata). Racial identity of population in east-central New Guinea (headwaters of R Fly) uncertain and possibly an eastern extension of nominate, with which tentatively included.
The following 4 subspecies are recognised:
hyperythra Salvadori, 1875 - Mountains of north-western and western New Guinea (Vogelkop, Onin Peninsula, Wandammen Mts, Weyland Mts). Also east-central New Guinea (headwaters of R Fly, including upper R Palmer and Ok Tedi areas).
sepikiana Stresemann, 1921 - Sepik Mts, mountains south of R Mamberano and North Coastal Range, in northern New Guinea.
reichenowi Rothschild & Hartert, 1911 - Huon Peninsula (Saruwaged Mts), in north-eastern New Guinea.
salvadorii Rothschild, 1897 - Mountains of south-eastern New Guinea (eastern from L Kutubu and Mt Bosavi).
