Habitat
Subtropical and tropical mangrove. Also, subtropical and tropical lowland and montane moist forest, rural gardens, plantations.

Subspecies
Forms a superspecies with Green-backed Whistler (Pachycephala albiventris), White-vented Whistler (Pachycephala homeyeri) and Island Whistler (Pachycephala phaionota). Often treated as conspecific with Green-backed Whistler (Pachycephala albiventris) and White-vented Whistler (Pachycephala homeyeri).

Proposed subspecies vandepolli (southern Vietnam, Cambodia, eatern coasts of Malay Peninsula, Riau Archipelago, islands off western Sumatra), butaloides (Bangka, Belitung, southern Borneo, Java, Kangean Is, Bali, Lombok) and secedens (northern Borneo, Maratua I, Natuna Is, Karimata Is) not regarded as separable, and all merged with nominate.

The following 3 subspecies are recognised:

  • cinerea (Blyth, 1847)   -  North-eastern India to Indochina and the Greater Sundas.
  • plateni (Blasius, W, 1888)   -  Palawan, in western Philippines. Sometimes recognised as a full species, Pachycephala plateni.
  • grisola (Blyth, 1843)   -  Coasts from north-eastern India (Bay of Bengal) Eastern, including Andaman Is, Mergui Archipelago (western Myanmar) and Langkawi I (western Malaysia), to southern Vietnam (southern Annam), extending inland in Cambodia (Tonal Sap area) and south-western Laos, also Riau Archipelago, Sumatra and satellites (Simeulue, Nias, Batu Is, Siberut, South Pagai, Bangka, Belitung), Borneo (including Maratua I), Natuna Is, Karimata I, Java, Kangean Is, Bali and Lombok. Synonomous with cinerea.
