Habitat
Subtropical and tropical dry forest, subtropical and tropical moist lowland forest. From sea-level - 3,000 m.

Anguilla, Antigua and Barbuda, Aruba, Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, Brazil, Cayman Islands, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, Dominica, Dominican Republic, French Guiana, Grenada, Guadeloupe, Guyana, Haiti, Jamaica (B), Martinique, Mexico, Montserrat, Netherlands Antilles, Panama, Peru, Puerto Rico, St Kitts and Nevis, St Lucia, St Vincent and The Grenadines, Suriname, Trinidad and Tobago, Turks and Caicos Islands, USA (B), Venezuela, Virgin Islands (British) (B), Virgin Islands (U.S.) (B).

Subspecies
Probably forms a superspecies with Noronha Vireo (Vireo gracilirostris), Yellow-green Vireo (Vireo flavoviridis), Red-eyed Vireo (Vireo olivaceus) and Yucatan Vireo (Vireo magister).

The following 6 subspecies are recognised:

  • barbatulus (Cabanis, 1855)   -  Breeds south-eastern USA (southern Florida from Pasco and Volusia Counties south to Keys), Bahama Is, Cuba (including I of Pines), Little Cayman and Cayman Brac; migrates to South America (Amazon Basin).
  • altiloquus (Vieillot, 1808)   -  Breeds Jamaica, Hispaniola and Puerto Rico; migrates to northern South America.
  • grandior (Ridgway, 1884)   -  Old Providence I (east of Nicaragua), in south-western Caribbean.
  • canescens (Cory, 1887)   -  San Andrés I (east of Nicaragua), in south-western Caribbean.
  • bonairensis Phelps & Phelps Jr, 1948   -  Netherlands Antilles (Aruba, Curaçao, Bonaire) and Margarita I (off north-eastern Venezuela).
  • barbadensis (Ridgway, 1874)   -  Lesser Antilles (from St Croix south to Barbados), possibly also Trinidad.
