Subspecies
May be most closely related to Yellow-winged Vireo (Vireo carmioli). More study needed. Very wide divergence between coastal nominate subspecies and interior stephensi, indicating effective genetic separation of sufficiently long standing to raise the question of distinction at species level. Further study is required.

Proposed subspecies insularis, described from Victoria, on Vancouver I (British Columbia), in Canada, is synonymized with obscurus.

The following 13 subspecies are recognised:

  • obscurus Anthony, 1891   -  Extreme south-western Canada (south-western British Columbia) southern in western USA to north-western California.
  • parkesi Rea, 1991   -  North-western California (south to Marin County).
