Subspecies
Genus formerly placed in its own separate family, Vireolaniidae. Alternatively, is sometimes placed in a subfamily, Vireolaniinae.

The following 4 subspecies are recognised:

melitophrys Bonaparte, 1851 - Interior southern Mexico from southern Jalisco south to eastern M�xico and from eastern San Luis Potosí south to western Veracruz.
crossini Phillips, AR, 1991 - South-western Mexico (Michoacán, Guerrero, southern Oaxaca).
quercinus Griscom, 1935 - Southern Mexico (Chiapas) and southern Guatemala (Volcán de Fuego and other mountains).
goldmani Nelson, 1903 - Oak forests of southern central Mexico.
