Subspecies
Genus formerly included with the helmet-shrikes (Prionopidae), which were at the time treated as a subfamily of Malaconotidae. However, recent studies suggest that it belongs with Laniidae. Forms a superspecies with Northern White-crowned Shrike (Eurocephalus ruppelli).
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
anguitimens Smith, 1836 - South-western and southern Angola and northern and
north-eastern Namibia east to Botswana (except south-west), extreme southern Zambia, central plateau of
Zimbabwe, and northern South Africa (western Limpopo Province).
niveus Clancey, 1965 - South-eastern Zimbabwe and adjacent SW
Mozambique south to north-eastern South Africa (eastern Limpopo south to extreme N
KwaZulu-Natal) and north-eastern Swaziland.
