Subspecies
Possibly part of the superspecies formed by Long-tailed Shrike (Lanius schach) and Grey-backed Shrike (Lanius tephronotus), being very similar to Grey-backed Shrike (Lanius tephronotus), especially in plumage.

Proposed subspecies quartus (from Duminagat, Mt Malindang, on Mindanao) considered synonymous with hachisuka.

The following 3 subspecies are recognised:

validirostris Ogilvie-Grant, 1894 - Northern Luzon (Cordillera and northern Sierra Madre), in northern Philippines.
tertius Salomonsen, 1953 - Northern Mindoro (Mt Halcon and Mt Dulungan), in north-central Philippines.
hachisuka Ripley, 1949 - Mindanao (Mt Malindang, mountains of Misamis Oriental, Mt Kitanglad and Civolig, Mt Apo), in southern Philippines.
