Subspecies
May form a superspecies with Emin's Shrike (Lanius gubernator).

The following 3 subspecies are recognised:

souzae Barboza du Bocage, 1878 - Southern PRCongo, south-western DRCongo and Angola (excluding west and south).
burigi Chapin, 1950 - Rwanda, Burundi and western Tanzania.
tacitus Clancey, 1970 - South-eastern Angola (Cuando Cubango) eastern to south-eastern DRCongo (Katanga), Zambia, Malawi, western Mozambique, extreme northern Zimbabwe and north-eastern Namibia, probably also in northern Namibia (Okavango) and northern Botswana (R Chobe).
