Food
Insects procured from among leaves and on the ground.

Voice
A loud, long, mournful double whistle, 'tew-tee'. A repeated 'chig'. A single soft chirring note. Song is excited and musical.

Nest
Cup-shaped, compact, composed of strips of bark bound with cobweb, lined with grass and decorated on the outside with bark fragments, usually in the fork of a mangrove, up to 4 meters above the water.

Eggs (Guide)
2 or 3; lustrous, pale olive-brown, green or yellow-green, with blotches and spots of various reds and browns, with underlying slate-grey, usually forming a zone at the larger end; rounded-oval; about 19 x 15 mm. Incubation: probably 14 - 16 days; by female.

Young
Altricial, nidicolous. Probably fed by both parents.

Subspecies
The following 4 subspecies are recognised:

  • pulverulenta (Bonaparte, 1850)   -  Southern New Guinea from near East Cape to Utanata River, also Gellvink Bay and Humboldt Bay east to middle Sepik.
  • cinereiceps (Hartert, 1905)   -  Coastal central-western to north-western WA, from Exmouth Gulf, north-east to Napier Broome Bay and Cambridge Gulf, north-eastern Kimberley Divide, but excluding Eighty Mile Beach.
  • alligator (Mathews, 1912)   -  Coastal NT, from Victoria River, east to south-western Gulf of Carpentaria, and including Tiwi Island and Groote Eylandt.
  • leucura (Gould, 1869)   -  Coastal northern Qld, from south-eastern Gulf of Carpentaria, north to islands of Torres Strait, then south-east to Mackay, and also Aru Island.
