Subspecies
The following 3 subspecies are recognised:
australis (Sparrman, 1788) - South Island, New Zealand.
longipes (Lesson & Garnot, 1827) - North Iisland, Little Barrier Island and Kapiti Island, northern New Zealand. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, North Island Robin (Petroica longipes).
rakiura Fleming, CA, 1950 - Stewart Island, off southern South Island, New Zealand.
Similar Species
New Zealand Tomtit (Petroica macrocephala) which is smaller, the males with white wing bars and distinct white / yellowish chests and females brown and white.
