Subspecies
Forms a superspecies with Spangled Honeyeater (Melipotes ater), Arfak Honeyeater (Melipotes gymnops) and Foja Honeyeater (Melipotes carolae).

Subspecies goliathi intergrades with nominate in Herzog Mts.

The following 3 subspecies are recognised:

  • fumigatus Meyer, 1886   -  Eastern Herzog Mts and mountains of south-eastern New Guinea.
  • kumawa Diamond, 1985   -  Kumawa Mts, in north-western New Guinea (southern Bomberai Peninsula).
  • goliathi Rothschild & Hartert, 1911   -  Central Ranges from Weyland Mts and Nassau Mts east to Bismarck-Kubor Mts (including Mt Bosavi) and western Herzog Mts, also Cyclops Mts and central North Coastal Range (Bewani Mts).
