Subspecies
No subspecies.
Forms a superspecies with Vogelkop Honeyeater (Melidectes leucostephes), Belford's Honeyeater (Melidectes belfordi) and Yellow-browed Honeyeater (Melidectes rufocrissalis) and all, along with Cinnamon-browed Honeyeater (Melidectes ochromelas) and Ornate Honeyeater (Melidectes torquatus), comprise a group of relatively large species that differ from others in genus in size, morphology, plumage and voice. Considered a subspecies of Belford's Honeyeater (Melidectes belfordi) by some authors, but may be closer to Vogelkop Honeyeater (Melidectes leucostephes) or Yellow-browed Honeyeater (Melidectes rufocrissalis).
