Subspecies
Formerly considered conspecific with Rufous-sided Honeyeater (Ptiloprora erythropleura), Mayr's Honeyeater (Ptiloprora mayri) and Grey-streaked Honeyeater (Ptiloprora perstriata). May form a superspecies with Mayr's Honeyeater (Ptiloprora mayri).

The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

guisei (De Vis, 1894) - Mountains of south-eastern New Guinea, eastern from Bismarck and Kubor Ranges and Herzog Mts.
umbrosa Mayr, 1931 - Adelbert Mts, Mt Bosavi, Huon Peninsula (Saruwaged Mts), Schrader Range and eastern Highlands (western at least to Tari), in north-eastern and eastern New Guinea.
