(Rand, 1936)
Foothills and coasts of south-eastern New Guinea east to Milne Bay (including Sariba I), in north from at least Goodenough Bay (Nowata), and in south from Malalaua. Also (racially distinct, identity uncertain) northern watershed of south-eastern New Guinea.

Not recognised by BirdLife International. Sometimes considered conspecific with Graceful Honeyeater (Microptilotis gracilis ).
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
stevensi Rand, 1936 - Northern slope of Mts. of south-eastern New Guinea.
cinereifrons (Rand, 1936) - South-eastern New Guinea.
