Subspecies
Subspecies stresemanni possibly better merged with vagans, as birds on Batanta I appear intermediate between the two. Proposed subspecies brunneus (from Siwi, in Arfak Mts) is synonymized with nominate.
The following 4 subspecies are recognised:
megarhynchus (Gray, 1858) - West Papuan Is (Salawati and Misool), north-western, southern and eastern New Guinea (Vogelkop east to Weyland Mts and to Astrolabe Bay, Huon Peninsula and Milne Bay); Aru Is.
vagans (Bernstein, 1864) - Waigeo and Batanta, in West Papuan Is.
stresemanni E. J. O. Hartert, 1930 - Yapen I and northern New Guinea (Geelvink Bay east to Astrolabe Bay).
brunneus Salomonsen, 1966 - Mts. of north-western New Guinea; Misool and Salawati islands.
