North-western and eastern New Guinea (Ransiki and Kebar valleys, in eastern Vogelkop; and coasts from Jayapura in northern and, in south, from Merauke east, including isolates in Jimi valley and Aiyura valley, to south-eastern mountains); and northern Queensland (from northern tip of Cape York Peninsula southern on in eastern coastal zone to Massy Creek area, east of Coen), in extreme north-eastern Australia.

Saucer-shaped, composed of twigs and bark, lined with grass and other fine materials, placed in a tree, usually within 10 m of the ground.
Eggs (Guide)
1, very rarely 2; pale green-olive to cream, scrawled all over with umber, purple-grey and black thread-like lines; oval; about 32 x 26 mm. Incubation: by female.
Young
Probably semi-altricial, nidicolous. Fledge in about 21 days.
Subspecies
No subspecies.
Both sexes of Australian population heavier than New Guinea ones, but differences considered insufficient to warrant naming of geographical subspecies.
