Habitat
Mainly open riverine woodland and in thickets of shrubs in rocky gorges and ranges of arid zone and where water is available.

Nest
Saucer-shaped, shallow, composed of thin dead twigs, lined with finer twigs and sometimes dry grass, in a leafy tree, up to 10 meters above the ground.

Eggs (Guide)
Usually 2; pale grey-green covered with winding scrawls of brown and occasional darker blotches; oval; about 32 x 26 mm. Incubation: by female.

Young
Probably semi-altricial, nidicolous.

Subspecies
Probably forms a superspecies with Spotted Bowerbird (Chlamydera maculata), and in the past considered conspecific.

The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

  • guttata Gould, 1862   -  Western Australia from Eighty Mile Beach south, immediately east of North West Cape, through Pilbara into central interior of state; and from Rawlinson Range eastern into southern northern Territory (east to c. 200-300 km northern and east of Alice Springs), and south to north-western South Australia (to c. 100 km south of border).
  • carteri Mathews, 1920   -  North West Cape, WA.


Similar Species
Spotted Bowerbird (Chlamydera maculata) which has a more eastern range.
