Nest
In a hollow of a live tree, composed of bark, grass and fur, usually at a consirable height.
Eggs (Guide)
2 or 3, rarely 4; white to creamy white, sparingly dotted with dark red-brown or purplish-black, mostly at the larger end; oval; about 22 x 17 mm. Incubation: 22 - 23 days; by female.
Young
Altricial. Fledge in about 26 days.
Subspecies
Forms a superspecies with Papuan Treecreeper (Cormobates placens), and has in the past been treated as conspecific. Subspecies minor has in the past been treated as a separate species, but birds intermediate between it and nominate subspecies occur in south-eastern Queensland.
The following 5 subspecies are recognised:
leucophaea (Latham, 1801) - South-eastern Australia from central eastern New South Wales, south and south-west to south-eastern SA and inland to upper watersheds of the Murray - Darling Basin.
grisescens (Mathews, 1912) - Mt Lofty Ranges, SA.
metastasis Schodde, 1989 - North-eastern New South Wales and south-eastern Qld, north to the Dawson - Mackenzie Basin.
intermedia (Boles and Longmore, 1984) - Eastern Queensland (Clarke and Connors Ranges).
minor (Ramsay, EP, 1891) - North-eastern Qld.
Similar Species
Red-browed Treecreeper (Climacteris erythrops) which has a smaller white area on the throat, and a rich chestnut eyebrow and eyepatch and Brown Treecreeper (Climacteris picumnus) which lacks the obvious white throat and has a white eyebrow.
