Bolivia, Peru.

South-eastern Peru (Vilcanota Mts, in Cuzco) east to central Bolivia (Yungas of Cochabamba).

Subspecies
No subspecies.

Probably closest to Puna Tapaculo (Scytalopus simonsi) and to unnamed species from south-central Peru (Apur��mac). Also related to Vilcabamba Tapaculo (Scytalopus urubambae). Purported relationship with Silvery-fronted Tapaculo (Scytalopus argentifrons) seems unlikely.
