Habitat
Lowland humid forest, especially mature secondary growth.
Brazil (B).
North-eastern Brazil south of R Amazon, from eastern Pará (eastern bank of R Tocantins) east to Piauí and western Ceará.

Subspecies
No subspecies.
Apparently more closely related to Rufous Gnateater (Conopophaga lineata) than previously suggested. May be part of a group formed by that species along with Ash-throated Gnateater (Conopophaga peruviana), Slaty Gnateater (Conopophaga ardesiaca) and Chestnut-crowned Gnateater (Conopophaga castaneiceps), possibly also including Black-bellied Gnateater (Conopophaga melanogaster).
