Subspecies
In the past, distinctive subspecies boliviana and similis have together been treated as forming a separate species. In addition, although three subspecies described from Pacific slope in Colombia and Ecuador on basis of differences in underpart pattern and bill color, considerable variation exists among all that region's populations, any one of which can span virtually entire range of variation in these characters. Hence, mindoensis and possibly zarumae perhaps better considered as synonyms of ochraceiventris.

The following 8 subspecies are recognised:

  • costaricensis Lawrence, 1866   -  Costa Rica and western Panama (east to Veraguas).
  • brevis Nelson, 1912   -  Eastern Panamá (eastern Darién).
  • ochraceiventris Chapman, 1922   -  Western Andes of Colombia.
  • mindoensis Chapman, 1925   -  North-western Ecuador.
  • zarumae Chapman, 1922   -  South-western Ecuador.
  • flavirostris (Sclater, 1858)   -  Amazonian slope in Colombia and Ecuador, and presumably also extreme northern Peru.
  • similis Carriker, 1933   -  Peru (southern and east of R Marañón) south to Pasco, including Pico Sira in eastern Huánuco.
  • boliviana Chapman, 1919   -  South-eastern Peru (Puno) south-east to central Bolivia (Yungas of Cochabamba).
