South-eastern Peru (Madre de Dios, Puno), and from central Bolivia (northern Cochabamba) southern on Andean slope to north-western Argentina (Jujuy, Salta).

Subspecies
May belong in the superspecies formed by Red-and-white Antpitta (Grallaria erythroleuca), Bay Antpitta (Grallaria capitalis), Rusty-tinged Antpitta (Grallaria przewalskii), White-bellied Antpitta (Grallaria hypoleuca) and Yellow-breasted Antpitta (Grallaria flavotincta). Birds from Jujuy, in north-western Argentina, described as subspecies cinereiventris on basis of two specimens with darker belly and sepia-olive (rather than olive-grey) flanks but the validity of this taxon requires confirmation.
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
albigula Chapman, 1923 - Andes of south-eastern Peru and western Bolivia to extreme north-western Argentina.
